Should I Stay in Europe or Go Home? A Gentle Guide for Migrants in Transition

“I thought moving here was the answer. But now… I’m not so sure.”

Maybe your relationship ended.

Maybe your dreams feel out of reach.

Maybe you’re lonely, confused, or simply exhausted, and now you’re wondering:

“Should I stay… or should I go back home?”

This is one of the most vulnerable, complicated, and courageous questions a migrant can ask. And no one can answer it but you, but you don’t have to reflect alone.

Let’s gently walk through this crossroads together.

Why This Question Hurts (Even If It’s the Right One)

  • You’ve already invested so much like money, energy, identity

  • You fear being seen as a “failure” if you go back

  • You’re emotionally tied to people here, even if they hurt you

  • You don’t know what “home” even feels like anymore

  • You don’t want to give up… but you also can’t keep going like this

This is not weakness. This is awareness. And awareness is brave.

Questions to Help You Reflect Clearly

Legal & Practical

  • Do I have a valid visa or residency status if I stay?

  • Can I support myself financially if I stay independently?

  • What are my realistic options if I return home?

Emotional & Relational

  • Am I staying because I truly want to or because I feel trapped?

  • Do I feel emotionally safe, respected, and supported here?

  • Is my desire to stay rooted in growth or survival?

Personal & Purposeful

  • Do I still recognize myself in this new life?

  • Am I growing or slowly disappearing?

  • What kind of life feels more aligned with who I want to become?

What If the Answer Is “I Don’t Know Yet”?

That’s okay. That’s where coaching comes in.
