Partner Visa to the Netherlands: Step-by-Step From Someone Who’s Been There

Updated: Apr 24

"Love knows no borders... but immigration offices sure do."

If you're in a relationship with a Dutch or EU national and dreaming of finally living together in the Netherlands, you’ve likely heard about the Partner Visa (also known as the MVV + residence permit process). But hearing about it and living through it are two very different things.

I know because I’ve been through it myself.

This isn’t just a checklist. It’s your emotional and practical roadmap, created by someone who’s walked the same road, cried the same tears, and ultimately found clarity and empowerment along the way.

Step-by-Step: The Dutch Partner Visa Process

1. Know the Legal Requirements

The IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) requires that:

  • You and your partner are both 21 or older

  • You have a long-term exclusive relationship or marriage

  • Your partner lives in (or is returning to) the Netherlands

  • Your partner earns enough income to support you

  • You pass the Civic Integration Exam at the Dutch embassy

Tip: If you’ve lived together before abroad, this strengthens your case.

2. Gather Your Documents Early

You'll need documents from both the Netherlands and your home country, such as:

  • Valid passports

  • Birth and marriage certificates

  • Proof of relationship (photos, chats, travel, notarized statements)

  • Sponsor’s employment contract and income documents

  • Civic integration exam certificate

Note: Many of these need to be legalized or translated, so don’t wait!

3. Submit the Application

Your Dutch/EU partner (or you, if applying together abroad) will submit:

  • Application for MVV and residence permit (together)

  • Pay the application fee (approx. €243)

  • Include all supporting documents

  • Submit online via IND or by post

Note: You’ll then wait up to 90 days for a decision.

4. If Approved, Schedule Your MVV Appointment

You’ll be called to the Dutch embassy in your country to:

  • Provide biometrics

  • Submit your passport for visa sticker

  • Pick up your MVV (valid for 90 days to enter NL)

Once you land in the Netherlands, you’ll pick up your residence permit and register at your new address.

What Most Guides Don’t Tell You…

The emotional part is just as complex as the legal one:

  • Feeling pressure to prove your relationship is “real”

  • Being apart during the waiting time

  • Worrying if you’ve done everything right

  • Facing judgment, red tape, or rejection
